Hello, Kristi here from SweetKM. Bold bead statement necklaces are everywhere. It's no surprise that they are popular when the potential for fun color play, and interesting shape compositions are endless. Handmade statement jewelry is a great way to top off a handmade outfit for a completely customized look. Here is one way to make your own with a few simple supplies from the craft store.
1. Assemble the supplies. You will need air hardening clay, bamboo skewers, acrylic paint, a paint brush, and about 18" of cord. 2. Break off a hunk of clay. Roll it into a ball. Push the sharp end of the skewer through the middle of the ball.
3. Repeat the bead shaping process with a few more beads, leaving a space between each one. 4. Prop the skewer across a bowl or tray for about 24 hours until the beads harden.
5. Give each bead a few coats of acrylic paint. 6. Allow paint to dry completely.
7. Remove the beads from the skewer, and thread them onto the cord. 8. Tie a knot in the ends of the cord and you're finished!
I made this necklace for myself, but when L showed up in perfectly layered purples, she couldn't keep her hands off of the chubby beads. It was love at first sight. Naturally, this one is now hers. L is also wearing a much loved Beachcomber Sweater I made a few years ago. You can find out more about the Beachcomber pattern (psst! It's on sale.) on the SweetKM blog today!
