Have you ever hear of the term UPCYCLING? It was first used in 1994, and was used to explain a recycling process, where waste materials were used to create new products of better quality or higher environmental value. So what does that mean for the fashion industry? Basically, you find some second hand clothing or material, wash and dry them, then you use that material to make something NEW... When I first started Laïla B. in 2004, I was doing just that... But the term UPCYCLING for clothing didn't quite exist yet, it's only been a popular word in last couple of years. However, this form of recycling has existed for ever... I am sure your great grand mother was upcycling. Julie Andrews upcycles The Von Trapps curtains into cute outfits for the kids in The Sound of Music! It wasn't so glamourous then, now it's almost a form of Luxury!!! If you understand the process, than you understand the high price tags... It is custom clothing after all! There are lot's of Upcycling companies out there these days, just type upcycle on Etsy
and you will get pages of upcycled items... but in my opinion there are only handful I really like. I am not a huge fan of patchworks and mix matching a bunch of different colors and patterns! So, here is some of my favorites...
