BOYS WILL BE BOYS: heroes...

Photo via ffffound

I
I will be king
And you
You will be queen
Though nothing will
Drive them away
We can beat them
Just for one day
We can be Heroes
Just for one day...
Milks on the rocks

Some Rock n' Rolling styles for your little ones...

We can be Heroes
We can be Heroes
We can be Heroes
Just for one day
We can be Heroes
We're nothing
And nothing will help us
Maybe we're lying
Then you better not stay
But we could be safer
Just for one day

Knitting with Kids...

So when is it the right time to teach your kids to knit? With a bit of searching and some helpful tips from my cousin Christine (check out her Facebook page Christa Tricot), it would seem that 6 years old is the magic number! Guess what? The best way to start is with your fingers... yup, no needles needed! This will get your children familiar with the yarn and the whole concept. Then you can switch to needles...

Here are some useful tips...
For finger knitting, there are some really helpful website and videos to show you how to get started:

For some french instructions:

Le tricot aux doigts, c'est un jeu d'enfant! par mimilabidouille

If you are not into videos (like me!) for some easy to follow photo instructions go to Knitty:

For a realy cute and super easy DIY project... make a jump rope from recycled socks on Family Fun:

You can also start with a Knitting Nancy... that's how I started! You can find these in any craft store!
Check out this website... Wayne's This and That:  it's all about knitting nancies, they show you how to get started... and try making your own:

Or buy a kit...
Alex Toys: always has crafty kits of all kinds...

Find this bear kit on Amazon.
Now to get you started with needles, what you should know:
- Start with some wood needles, they are less likely to slip.
- Use some larger needles... at least 4mm.
- Try using 2 different color needles, so the kids can differentiate between their left and right more easily.
- Use acrylic wool... it's easier to knit and less expensive! But if you prefer the natural stuff, start with wool.
- Use light color yarn... easier again.
- Teach your kids these rhymes:

for the knit stitch

In through the front door,
Once around the back,
Peek through the window,
And off jumps Jack!

for the purl stitch

Down through the bunny hole,
Around the big tree,
Up pops the bunny,
And off goes she!

- Have lot's of patience and don't fuss over mistakes!

Look how cute this kit is... this would make such a cute gift!

Most importantly... HAVE FUN!!!!

DID IT MYSELF: my attempt at knitting...

Mémé & me!
I love to knit and crochet, perhaps I got those genes from my grandmother (photo above). She used to make the most beautifull leaf patterns and knitted up until her 90's...
I can remember being little and making scarves for my barbies with a knitting Nancy and a little later my mom taught me how to make some basic scarfs. I guess those were my first experiences... But it wasn't untill I moved to Paris (10 years ago) with my Aunt Tatyvette, that I really learnt how to knit. That is where I made my first sweater and learnt how to read and follow a pattern, somewhat! But what happened is that I invented my own stitch... I happen to do things a little weird sometimes, maybe because of my sligth dyslexia, I don't know my right from my left and so I ended up kniting backwards somehow. I realized I did something wrong when I ran out of wool so quickly, my "new" stitch required some sort of twisting and I needed a lot more wool. I can't tell you how much this sweater cost me!!! My Tatyvette was cracked up, we still don't know what I was doing wrong! Ever since, I've been knitting, I'm pretty much self taught and I never really follow a pattern, so I do a lot of un-knitting and it takes me forever... and when I get stuck, I look it up in some books or  the internet... it's my favorite tool! Thank you to all those knitters on the web, you've saved my life a few times. And a special thanks  to my friend Carina, she's the reason why I crochet... She taught me how to make a bikini and that was all I needed to get started!

So when I found out I was pregnant, I was so excited to know the sex of my baby, only so I could start knitting! So as soon as we found out,  the first thing I did (after I called my mom) was to shop for some wool... Here are some of the things I've made for Mister M & Miss E in the last 4 years!!!

My crochet shoes... I played around and came up with these before Miss E was born!

From the Debbie Bliss books: I love how they are easy to follow and with every new project, you learn a new technique, brilliant!

If you are ever in Paris you must go to La Droguerie... the best craft store ever! They have the best variety of beads, pom-poms, wool, buttons & books.  Oh! They have a new book... I must get my hands on it!!!!  Knit for kids...
I can' beleive this is the only picture I have of Mister M with this sweater... I don't know where I put it... I think it's in a fix it pile of mine!

I found this add in a magazine for some wool dertergent and fell in love with the dress, so I made my own version with circular needles and lot's of un-knitting and knitting. It first started out yellow too, but that was not a good color for my new baby girl...seriously! So I dyed it black, and it turned out sort of brown...

Oh how I love vintage magazines for knitting insirations... I made Miss E a sunsuit from this Layette Book, and I would love to make these socks as well...

Phildar are some of my favorite magazines for baby designs... Classic with twist, so inspiring! So far I've made two pieces for Miss E. There is soooo much I can't wait to make... I'd better hurry, before she get's to big!!!!

Here are, hopefully,  some of my future projects...

I got this Debbie Bliss book, so I could make Mister M this vest... LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!! It's harder to find good and fun designs for boys...

A new favorite magazine of mine... for your fashionable kid knits!!!! IDEAL (it's in french).

My latest vintage find: "Vêtements a faire soi-même"... How cool is this jumpsuit? I think I might start on this project first.. maybe even tonight!

Look at what my amazing Aunt Tatyvette has made for my babies...and me!

For Mister M:

 For Miss E:

For me (see 1st picture above)... my name was supposed to be Julia, so my aunt first made this dress with a "J", then when I was born my mom changed her mind and called me Celina, so Tatyvette had to change the letter on the dress! I love you Tatyvette...

And this, my mom made it (photo of me around the age of 2) and I still have it... it will fit Miss E this winter! Yeahhh!!!
